Thermography and Thermographic Surveys

Thermography : What is it?

Any item with a surface temperature above -273°C has an infra red signature that is invisible to the naked eye.

Tech Compliance Ltd use high tech thermal imaging equipment to convert his into an image that can not only be seen, but quantified by the human eye.

Thermographic surveys are a non destructive form of testing requiring little or no dismantling of the object being surveyed.

So how can we use it?

This new and exciting technology is being used in a number of ways in the building and maintenance industry. Now that we can visibly see heat signatures the following is now possible:

Electrical Equipment

Thermographic surveys are being used both alone and as part of a predictive maintenance system to help identify:

- Excessive loading on electrical systems
- Detection of loose or corroded terminal connections
- Identification of high resistance joints in control panels and control systems
- Overheating of electrical motors, brakes, transformers and other components
- All the above can lead to expensive and time costly break down of equipment at worst causing heat and even the risk of fire

Mechanical Equipment

Thermal imaging can be used to monitor the following:

- Excessive loading on electrical pneumatic and hydraulic motors
- Worn or collapsed bearings or shafts on moving machinery
- Over tightened or loose drive belts
- Motor bearing wear or tear
- Wrongly adjusted components in roll forming machinery
- Mis-aligned drive belts and chains
- All these items can result in costly down time but can be replaced easily once identified during planned predictive maintenance

Structures

Using this new technology we can survey the following:

- Adequacy of building insullation
- Maintaining and heating efficiently a vast array of buildings
- Identification of leaks and standing water in flat roofs
- Efficiency and quality of fitting for single or double glazed windows
- Each of these can be used to limit the costs of maintaining a vast array of buildings
